Only Visiting

(From: Ethics of Twilight. By Edward Hirsch. Pg. 161)

Mysteries of light and shadow,

Of brighter nights and darker days.

The music of celestials will cease,

And silence will coil through my head.

Shotgun sunrises, blinding annoyances-

My anger rises like an ocean.

It’s choices and regrets, failures

Coursing electric through my heart.

I offer rejection to my ravenous nature-

My incorrigible, unrelenting flesh-

And choose rather, to wrap myself

Cocoon or blanket, my iniquities vanishing

Through the burning eyes of God.
