Elegy for Melissa

Alexandra Leadbetter

Summer dies in winter’s bloom;

The seasons changed without you.

Time and time again, I think of you-

Pacing, fighting for purpose in my steps.

Living weightlessly between lamenting

what’s lost, and envying the dead.

I’m guilty, knowing each day I don’t think

is a day I have forgotten

what you gave up.

You walked away

from scholarships,

the man of your dreams.

The future we gossiped of wanting.

The thoughts that rush in winter’s bloom

are what make it hard to go on without yo
